| The Master Class will concentrate on how we develop our own specific narratives particularly in terms of overall structure, pace, dramatic highlights and final resolution. We will try and show how we work as a team throughout the whole process from initial character identification and delineation through character designs and written descriptive profiles, storyboard, and animatic construction.
It will describe the main areas that we concentrate on when designing and giving identity to our characters and how we delegate different areas of research and story development according to each of our particular skills. It will demonstrate the importance of thorough initial visual and audio research through acute observation and sound recordings.
It will demonstrate the importance of bringing a personal perspective to character design and to their background histories based on personal experience and observation.
It will stress the importance of bringing depth of personality to characters by demonstrating the construction of "background histories" to individual characters, particularly in " Dreams & Desires" and the importance of dealing with universal themes within any narrative.
It will examine the specific problems associated with building a series of related films or episodes, the importance of anticipation, build up and continuity in episodic projects as demonstrated in Dreams & Desires -" Family Ties" and "Beverly Thrills"
It will talk about the role of diary in relation to Dreams and `Desires - how the diary structure informed and defined the overall construction of D & D and helped solve the problems of series continuity.
We will demonstrate how the conventions of Video Diary were adopted to inform and design individual scenes as well as the overall structure of the project and how it helped audiences get an intimate and vivid identification with the central character Beryl.
Overall we will try and show the importance of the relationship between the script writer and the visualizer/animator,how a mutually motivating and creative partnership which recognises Joanna's unique visual style and animation skills, functions and promotes an intense and highly creative way of working.
Finally the Master Class will be interspersed with visual examples, film excerpts, art work, storyboards and other research examples.
