Master Class 1 Georges Lacroix
Pre-Production in 3D computer animation,
the key for digital content creation

Taipei:10/27(Fri)13:00-17:00
Taichung:10/31(Tue)13:00-15:00

This master class will mainly focus on the pre-production in 3D computer animation. It is obvious that the development of project will be different if you decide to make either a live action film, 2D animation, clay, paper cut, stop motion, sand… etc. or 3D animation with or without special effects. Each of those techniques has its own constraint and constraint create style.

For example, so many films made in 3D would be probably better either in live action or in classical animation. The relation concept / technique is important to consider when you plan to develop your creation.

But, doesn't matter the technique you will choose, in every good creation you can find some points in common :
A good concept or a good idea is the starting point
The development of a rough story line
The script will have to be structured (in 3 acts for example) and opened to an
evolution at the same time you develop :
  - a rough story board
- dialogs
- character design
- background design
- great character with personality, which have to be believable (graphic design and soul)
- the art direction of your entire film will permit a special care of proportions and harmony.
The animation and acting which will give to your character the possibility to
express emotion
The storyboard. It is not a strict transcription of the script. It is a key point
between literature, where you come from, and image narration in movement,
where you go to.
The music and sound design will have to be considered from the beginning of
the concept.
Dialogs. In literature, you need dialogs. But sometimes you can avoid dialogs
when the character can make just a mimic to express his feeling.
The 2D animatic (animated storyboard with rough sound track and rough
dialogs). You will start here to give the rhythm of your film
What is special in making film in 3D animation ?
3D animation is a genre in-between live action and animation.
  - you will travel in a 3 dimensional world.
- you will have to master a free camera, even freer than in live action.
- you will have to consider basically the lighting like a director of photography
To end the pre-production process in 3D animation, you have to make a 3D animatic or, as it is also called "3D animated layout".

This master class will be illustrated with some student's films and excerpts from the schools where I have been teaching and an episode of "Insektors" (an Emmy Awarded TV series)
